Stakeholder Meeting in Kolding: Supporting Sustainable Innovation and Multi-Use of Marine Resources

On November 20-2, a two-day stakeholder meeting took place in Kolding, focusing on marine multi-use, with WIN@sea and the EU lighthouse projects ULTFARMS and OLAMUR at the forefront. These initiatives aim to integrate low-trophic aquaculture with fossil-free energy systems, prompting the question: can we cultivate seaweed and mussels within offshore wind farms?

The meeting provided a dynamic platform for sharing insights and celebrating project milestones. Stakeholders and experts contributed valuable perspectives, particularly during the panel discussions on day 2, “Opportunities & Challenges in Upscaling Multi-Use in Denmark.” Key topics included barriers to multi-use, market potential for seaweed and mussels, and community engagement in scaling initiatives.

The discussions emphasized site selection, permit challenges, and consumer acceptance of cultivated products, and have compiled the the key messages from the panel discussions below which you can read in the document attached: Key_messages_Kolding_panel_discussions_2024

Panel 1: Marine spatial plan – implications for multi-use of offshore wind and low-trophic aquaculture (LTA)

Panel 2: Seaweed & mussel products and market potential

Panel 3: Current opportunities & challenges with upscaling of multi-use (beyond LTA)

Panel 4: Engaging local stakeholders and communities in multi-use upscaling efforts
