Stakeholder Workshop on “Scaling-up EU cultivation of Shellfish and Algae”

Last month, a hybrid event on “Scaling Up EU Cultivation of Shellfish and Algae” was held, funded by CINEA and organised by ACRI-ST, Bantry Marine Research Station, and ACTeon Environment.

The event focused on low-trophic aquaculture, seaweed and shellfish farming, and their role in the EU Green Deal, aiming to reduce environmental impact and boost socio-economic resilience in coastal areas.

The workshop focused on:

  • Modelling results using Copernicus and EMODnet data
  • Insights on integrating shellfish and algae in offshore wind farms
  • Expert discussions on policy and community engagement
  • Breakout sessions on regulatory challenges

Project partners from the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (EATiP) participated in a workshop in Brussels, featuring presentations from experts, including project partner Jonne Kotta from the University of Tartu Marine Institute. The workshop examined findings from the CINEA study on non-fed aquaculture in offshore wind farms and its implications for food safety and nutrient balance.
